Using RS with my friends NAS server

Postby leke » Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:40 am

Hi, My friend has a NAS server. I guess he won't be able to install RS on the NAS server because it's the vendor's propriety system (Lacie I think). I was wondering if there was some way of connecting to his NAS, and/or some way he could use the NAS to connect to my RS?

Thanks in advance.

I've simply added the directories on my NAS to my shared folders. (In Ubuntu you have to point it to ~/.gvfs/)
Works great, but unfortunately only when my computer is running, of course.

you need retroshare running on the homeserver.

i have the same problem right now. all our files (roommates) are on a homeserver (Qnap 439 II+ 8TB  ) and there is no way to share these via retroshare?

You need a PC that runs RS and has the shares mounted as a network drive. Of course this is another PC running..

You have a 8 TB NAS.. maybe you are interested in nettop boxes? Searching amazon for "zotac" and similar gives 7 Watts devices that would not hurt running parallel and hosting whatever service you need.

cheers

and we dont want another pc running...

retroshare with a webinterface would be nice.
There are QPKG plugins for any QNAP Server, but retroshare is not available.
With transmission QPKG its possible to download torrents via the homeserver. Just login to the webinterface and add a torrent, it will be downloaded straight to the homeserver.

There are some NAS devices where you can install your own linux. It would be awesome if one of the freaks here would provide a image which other would download and flash on such an NAS, so that all the linux noobs like mee could run RS 24/7 on a NAS. My guess is that Synology would be the best shoot:

I am Running a Raspberry Pi with Retroshare. It Runs Debian.

Which serves the Files from my Nas in Retroshare.
The directorys from my NAS are mounted in the Raspberry Pi Filesystem.

I control RS Remote via Gui and and TightVNCServer and Viewer.
Power is connected at my Modem/Wifi-Router USB-Slot. consumption is 2-3Watt.

It runs 24/7
